Democrats have taken control of the US Congress by capturing both the Senate and House, providing President Donald Trump’s rivals a powerful tool to counter his policies during the remaining two years of his presidency. This is due to the 2026 US midterm election results being a great blow to the Republican Party as voters were worried about their living costs, economic situation, and future of the country.

According to reports from The Associated Press, Democrats gained victory in both the Senate and House to take charge of the Congress.

2026 US Midterm Election Results: What Happened?

Democrats registered impressive victories in Senate races by winning in Republican-controlled states, including Texas, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, South Carolina and North Carolina. Democrats also secured victory in key House races, even in the districts which voted for Trump in the previous presidential elections.

This result changes the balance of power in Congress in favor of the Democratic Party. The final vote count will still be available as states finish tabulating their votes.

Why Did Democrats Gain Ground?

The election cycle was driven by the problems that ordinary citizens were facing. Reporting from the Associated Press stressed issues like inflation, expensive cost of living, economic problems and corruption. Many people admitted they felt discontent with the way things were going in the country.

The Democrats promised to make living affordable, preserve health care, and hold the government accountable. These are also key issues that are on Democrats’ official agenda.

However, Republicans had to defend their fragile congressional majority with President Trump being at the center of political discourse.

What Does the Democratic Party Victory Mean for Trump?

However, Donald Trump is a member of the Republican Party, and not of the Democratic Party. Hence, given that the Democrats have majority in both chambers, his presidency will be subject to higher level of scrutiny, and the passing of legislations might become more difficult.

Having said that, the majority in Congress does not necessarily spell doom for the president’s agenda as he still has executive authority and the power to veto any legislation. Nevertheless, the Democrats now have the ability to influence how the legislature processes bills and conducts investigations through committee hearings.

This also means that the Republican Party now needs to reconsider their messaging in preparation for the next presidential election. More coverage on international politics can be found on DemocraX Politics. Visit us and read our article about the US-China summit conducted by Trump.

What Are US Midterm Elections?

The US midterm elections happen midway into the term of a president who serves a four-year term. The House of Representatives’ members numbering 435 and one-third of the Senate members will be chosen. In addition to that, governors and other state and local officials will be elected.

Although the president is not elected during these elections, they can determine which party takes control of Congress and the ability of their agenda being passed into law.
