Deadly attacks on Saudi Arabia have raised tensions across the region following the several strikes against Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, leaving civilians dead and flights disrupted. The recent assault on Sunday, October 11 has left one dead and 11 other people injured, just a day after the earlier attack which left at least 12 people dead and over 300 others injured.

Deadly Attacks on Saudi Arabia: What Happened?

The Saudi officials stated that an explosion hit Terminal 4 in Riyadh airport on Sunday, resulting in a fire outbreak. Moreover, the air defenses of the Saudi army intercepted a cruise missile around the airport and a drone in Eastern Province, as per reports.

The attack of October 10 reportedly resulted in deaths of at least 12 people, both Saudis and foreigners, as stated by Saudi aviation authorities. Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed the attack and threatened further attacks because of the increasing fighting related to Yemen’s conflict.

Why Are Saudi Arabia Attacks Raising International Tensions?

These attacks have been triggered by increased military confrontations between the forces loyal to Saudi Arabia-led Yemeni government and Houthis, which is a movement associated with Iran. Saudi Arabia has engaged in military operations against Houthi targets whereas the group claims that their attacks are a reaction to the Saudi offensive.

The issue has gone beyond the borders of Saudi Arabia since Riyadh is one of the busiest international airports, where additional airport attacks might impact travelers and airlines. In addition, the war may pose a threat to shipping lanes around Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb.

Travellers Should Be Aware Of

Passengers going to Riyadh are advised to check their flight status with their respective airlines before departing to the airport. Airport procedures may differ depending on the current assessment of the damage and dangers by the concerned officials.

Families whose relatives may be affected in the incidents should consider the safety and well-being of their injured loved ones first. More information will be forthcoming, and one should not assume the responsibilities for individual cases yet.
