The CJP 24-hour ultimatum from the Cockroach Janta Party has once again increased the pressure on Delhi Police because of the request for holding a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar. The CJP leaders visited Parliament Street Police Station on Monday, October 12, and requested the authorities to fix a time and date for the protest within 24 hours.

What Is the CJP 24-Hour Ultimatum Demand?

According to Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka of CJP, the party has left the scheduling to the discretion of Delhi Police for this time. As per reports, they have threatened to themselves schedule their next protest program in case authorities do not fix the date before the deadline.

The demand comes in the wake of an October 10 attempt to hold a protest, where the CJP leaders were detained by the police along with the protesters following heightened security in the capital. CJP claims that it wishes to continue its campaign via peaceful protests.

Why Is CJP Protesting Against Gyanesh Kumar?

The Cockroach Janta Party is seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to the allegations related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters’ list. The CJP and others have alleged that any changes in voters’ list can lead to the disenfranchisement of voters.

This issue has now extended beyond allegations into a broader debate regarding electoral integrity and public demonstration and the way in which the authorities deal with protests. These are allegations and demands by the opposition; they cannot be taken as a fact of corruption.

What Happens After the 24-Hour Deadline?

The pressing concern at the moment is whether Delhi Police will set a date and time for the protest. Whatever happens will be dependent on the approval of the authorities and their security plans. The reader is advised to look out for any notification from the Delhi Police regarding traffic problems at Jantar Mantar.

This deadline signals the beginning of a new chapter in this battle, but the next phase will be clear only after some communication from CJP.
