As Donald Trump hosts Xi Jinping at the White House, the two heads of state work out how to deal with some of the toughest problems the US and China have. The visit of Xi Jinping to the White House on September 24 is Xi’s first ever visit to the US capital in more than ten years.
After meeting and discussing things for about three hours, the two presidents went for an official state dinner. Trump spoke highly of their meeting, while Xi Jinping underscored the importance of talking and healthy competition between the two nations.
Trump Welcomes Xi Jinping: What Has Been Discussed?
Among other things the discussion between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping included a few points that could impact the global economy and security.
Trade and tariffs continue to play a key role, as both nations are trying to keep the economic disputes between them from escalating again. Artificial intelligence is another topic that the two presidents addressed.
There were other issues too that remained contentious, such as Taiwan. Xi asked the US to take a tough stance against Taiwan’s independence, while the general policy of the US remains that of keeping peace and stability in the region of Taiwan.
The issue of Iran has also made its way into the discussion. The Chinese have remained cautious while endorsing the approach adopted by the US towards Tehran, and there has been no major achievement on this front either during the talks on Thursday.
Why the Trump Xi Summit Matters
While the discussion between the two leaders may appear to be of no consequence to the common man, it should be kept in mind that the relationship between the US and China does matter in terms of international trade and other fields.
A breakthrough, however, did not seem apparent on any of the toughest issues. The talks demonstrated that the US and China are ready to continue their dialogue but disagreements over Taiwan, trade, artificial intelligence and Iran are still unresolved.
