The Indian nation is once again under the US tariff threat over Russian oil following the passage of sanctions legislation in America, which can enable President Donald Trump to impose tariffs as high as 100 percent on countries purchasing Russian energy in large quantities. The Indian nation has countered this by bringing the issue of energy and economic interests to the forefront.

The US House of Representatives has voted to pass the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 on September 16, forwarding the legislation to Trump after its previous approval in the US Senate.

This move will have huge implications for India, one of the biggest purchasers of Russian oil.

Why Is the US Threatening 100% Tariffs Over Russian Oil?

Washington seeks to cut off the revenues from energy which go into funding the Russian war in Ukraine. The law will impose more sanctions on Russia’s energy and financial sector as well as sanctions on vessels used for transporting Russian oil.

The aspect that has more relevance for New Delhi is that it provides the US president powers to impose an additional tariff of up to 100% on large consumers of Russian oil and gas.

It does not mean that there is a 100% duty on Indian products. It all depends on how the US administration exercises the powers conferred to it by the legislation.

The US legislation lays out the whole sanctions regime, while the White House had supported before keeping the power to impose tariffs as a means of increased pressure on Russia.

India Responds to US Tariff Threat: Energy Security Comes First

India’s reaction has revolved around one key idea: maintaining affordability and reliability of energy supply for its 1.4 billion people.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India is still committed to energy security through diversification of sources and shifting market dynamics. India has also stated that it has conveyed the possible implications for India-US relations and international energy markets to Washington.

India has also conveyed its intent to adopt all necessary measures for safeguarding its economic interests.

This stance forms part of an even broader issue of strategic autonomy. According to DemocraX’s report on the BRICS Summit 2026, India is making increasing efforts for giving more influence to developing nations in international economic regulations.

Why Russian Oil Matters So Much to India

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian crude oil has gained importance for India in terms of its oil consumption.

India imported record amounts of Russian crude oil in 2026, making any potential switch away from Russia uncertain due to doubts about alternative sources of crude oil and their costs.

What Happens Next With Trump’s Russian Oil Tariffs?

Now the immediate concern is Trump and the utilization of new tariff power.

In the case of India, stakes are exceptionally high, as it involves inexpensive Russian crude oil versus access to the massive American market.
