The officials had reported that about 7 lakh cusecs of water was expected to flow from Mundali by Sunday night, and the water discharge may go up to 8 lakh cusecs by Monday morning.

This alert comes after incessant rains in the upper catchment area of Mahanadi, especially Chhattisgarh has raised the inflow in the Hirakud reservoir. Hirakud Dam authorities have opened 28 gates to deal with the increased water level.
The engineers in the Water Resources Department have been put on high alert and there has been an order for close monitoring of embankments and vulnerable areas. It is anticipated that the situation will be significant for the next 24 to 48 hours.
